Just keep swimming, just keep swimming (my mantra, borrowed from Dory)
So, after my less than cheerful post yesterday, I just wanted to reassure everyone that I'm OK. Between my parents and Shalini and Kate (this is where connectivity and communication really makes a difference), I woke up feeling much brighter, which was also helped significantly by the reappearance of the sunshine! When I checked out of my Panzio this morning I had a really lovely chat with Mátá, the receptionist, and she was saying that she thought it could be hard for people outside of Budapest as Hungarian people are generally aloof, not unfriendly, but just that they can come across as wary of others and so not overly welcoming. I thought it ironic that she said that Hungarians are really concerned about immigration and this doesn't help with the perception of their attitude. She also said that Hungary is not set up for the sort of trip that I'm doing and agreed that it must be hard to meet people. Maybe in 10 years, and if more people like me show them that they are worth visiting. And boy, based on the journey I did from Veszprem to Topolca (pronounced Topoltsa) today, is it worth visiting! The scenery was just beautiful! I took a bus from Veszprem to Balatonfured where I picked up the train to Tapolca. The second half of my trip was a 1hr 20min train journey that 1hr 10mins of it was along the northern shore of Lake Balaton, often with the track running only 5-10 metres away from the edge of the lake. Lake Balaton is the second largest lake in Europe and surrounded on its northern side by beautiful hills. It's super green and lush and is a big wine producing region. I'll be out and about exploring tomorrow so will provide pictures and give you more of an update then. This was really just a quick post to let you know that all is good.
